Today we had another Mario Golf: World Tour teaser from Nintendo, for the first time we now have an underwater course - it's called Cheep-Cheep Lagoon. The below quote is what Nintendo 3DS UK had to say on their facebook page about the new course.

Mario Golf: World Tour Logo

"Hold your breath! Here’s an exclusive look at Cheep Cheep Lagoon, a previously unrevealed course in Mario Golf: World Tour. This underwater course has lots of obstacles to help and hinder play with slightly different underwater physics to challenge more experienced players."

And heres Nintendo of America giving us a first look. Am I the only person who after looking at that artwork really wishes there was going to be a Wii U version? How good would that gameplay look in HD.

But unfortunately, there is some rather bad news following this wonderful announcement, the tweet below indicates to me that humanity has taken a horrible turn for the worse, we can only pray that it was an ironic joke :-(

You can check out all three of the pictures below in full size, we've also added them to our Mario Golf: World Tour: Backgrounds and Courses Gallery

Weekly Mario Bros Retro feature!

We have a bigger than normal portion of retro Mario goodness for your enjoyment this week, to make up for the fact that last weeks retro post was missed due to having a lot to report on after Thursday 13th's Nintendo Direct announcement, so sorry for that guys. Hope this will make up for it.

We start in July/Aug 1989 with the seventh edition of Nintendo Power Magazine with the 1 Up Specials for both Super Mario Bros and Super Mario Bros 2 from Nintendo Power Magazine Vol. 7 followed by a  preview for the Super Mario Bros. Super Show in the same magazine.

We then move to January/Feb of 1990 for Nintendo Power Magazine Vol. 9 (Nintendo Power Vol. 8 had a break from the Mario Madness and let some other games have a chance) where the Gameboy and its flagship Mario title "Super Mario Land" were showcased for the first time in print. In this same previews section in the very same volume was a preview of Super Mario Bros. 3

In Nintendo Power Vol. 10 there was another article on Super Mario Bros. 3 - this time it was three pages on The Making of Super Mario Bros 3 followed by the game designer profile of Shigeru Miyamoto who was looking rather young and radiant I might add, to be expected given that this was 24 years ago (Omg, I was 4 or errr, 5)

Next we are visiting March/April of 1990 and Nintendo Power Vol. 11, still in the height of the Super Mario Bros 3 reign, and in that spirit, we had a 9 Page Guide to Super Mario Bros 3 exploring the power-ups in the game, and giving overviews of all the different worlds.

An 84 page guide to Super Mario Bros. 3 in Nintendo Power Magazine Volume 13

So, ready for the main course? The final part of this week serving of meaty goodness, comes from Nintendo Power Magazine Vol 13, well actually it IS Nintendo Power Magazine Vol 13 which was a full blown 84 page Super Mario Bros 3 Strategy Guide.

Hope you enjoyed this weeks oldskool Super Mario Bros stuff. And don't worry, although part of my project is to restore our entire Nintendo Power Magazine section (Mario series specific articles) in as high as a res as possible, I will be breaking this up with other stuff, infact I've been buying up things like Valiant Super Mario Bros comics, Mario Bros Movie guides and retro strategy guides, as well as every Nintendo Adventure Book for quite a long time now to make sure I've got some really good material for you in future updates, also just bought a hand scanner thing so I can scan in nice resolution, but without destroying mint condition 23 year old mags!

Check us out for next Friday, I haven't decided what its going to be yet, but it won't be from Nintendo Power next week.

Nintendo enjoy success at the third annual New York Video Game Critics awards for both Super Mario 3D World and the Zelda Franchises Link Between Worlds at Brooklyn's Pfizer Auditorium.

New York Video Game Critics Circle

The extremely well received Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds for the Nintendo 3DS winning in the best handheld console game category, and Super Mario 3D World (aka the most next-gen game of 2013, quoting EDGE Magazine November last year) winning in the Best Kids Game of 2013.

Nice as that is for these titles to get their well deserved recognition, KIDS GAME?! Have you tried getting all three stars, the stamp, and the gold flag on some of those levels? A little annoying to see 3D World pigeon-holed like that.

A few things I'd like to mention in todays update!

  • I would like to welcome our newest member of the TMB team to the site, Ben. He is our retro game guide and walkthrough master, his first guide is up, for Super Mario 64 and you can check it out here. Ben is doing Paper Mario 64 next, so stay tuned for that one!
  • I have just started a section about the Nintendo Adventure Books series, ten of the twelve books were based on the Super Mario Bros series and universe so it seemed rude not to cover them. We've even got a couple of the books online for you to download and read, I am hoping this won't be a problem as they've been out of print for 22 years+
  • Also we have two new affiliates, first of all Yoshi Moon, a very promising looking fan site dedicated to Yoshi and Cool Video Game Stuff which, as it quite rightly says on their site "the name says it all" - this site is run by Timby the webmaster of one of our existing affiliate sites Mario Mayhem.  Good luck with your sites guys.

In a recent statement on Nintendo Japan's official website; Nintendo president Satoru Iwata had a lot to say about the companies recent bad run in sales and how they are going to attempt to change the fortunes of the Wii U and Nintendo as a company in 2014.
