#5. Poker
Starting us off at number 5 we have Picture Poker, a poker/video poker game that features as one of Luigi’s table games in ‘Super Mario 64 DS’. It’s close to 5 card stud found in most casinos, your aim is to have a better 5 card hand than your opponent. After your hand is dealt, your given the option to replace some or all of your cards. The dealer (Luigi) then has the same choice. Both sets of 5 cards are then shown and the winner is the player with the strongest hand and you win more coins depending on the rank of your hand; 1 pair, 2 pair, 3 of a kind, full house, 4 of a kind and 5 of a kind. If the dealers hand happens to win you lose 5 coins. Stars that player’s posses affect the minimum bet amount during the game.

#4. Roulette

AAlso in ‘Super Mario 64 DS’ we find Mushroom Roulette, a roulette mini-game that features the traditional betting mat with red and black Mario themed icons and a normal roulette wheel with the same red and black icons running alternately in each slot. You start the game with 10 coins and can place a maximum bet of 5 coins on each symbol. Once you’ve placed your bets Luigi will begin the game by rolling the ball on the roulette wheel. If the ball lands in the slot that has a symbol matching one that you placed a bet on earlier, then the player is rewarded a payout. Like real roulette, you can also place bets on the lines between 2 symbols and on the junctions of 4 symbols. The game ends when a player runs out of coins.

#3. Blackjack
The game ‘New Super Mario Brothers’ for the Nintendo DS featured Luigi-Jack, a table card game that is played like the traditional casino game of Blackjack. In typical fashion your objective is to get to - or - closer to the score of 21 than your opponent. It’s a multiplayer game for 2 people and each player begins the game with 30 coins. If you hit 21 with a combination of 3, 4 or 5 cards then you win double your coins from the opposing player. If you hit a Luigi-Jack or 21, then you get coins x3. If you bust, i.e. go over 21, then you lose 5 coins. The winner is declared after the best of either 3, 5 or 7 rounds, or when one player runs out of coins. Blackjack also featured in playable casino in Super Mario RPG on the SNES.

#2. Casino War
Also in some versions of ‘New Super Mario Brothers’ you can find a version of Casino War called Luigi’s Thrilling Cards that is only playable in versus mode. Casino War is one of the simplest of all casino games in that each player is dealt a card face down and they must bet ‘blindly’ on whether their card will be higher than their opponents card or not. Casino War has a slight twist in that players are able to bet again after the initial ante’s (going to war), in a turn based fashion a bit like Texas Hold’Em poker. In this phase they can raise, call or fold. The player with the highest card after this round wins the total pot. In the case of a tie then it goes on card suit order, low to high its clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades.

#1. Slot Machines
Arguably the most famous and most well represented casino game across all Nintendo’s Mario Titles is the classic slot machine game. In truth it’s hard to pick just one game with the best slot machine style mini-game, there are just that many, but each one brings its own twist on the classic theme. We saw early versions throughout 8-bit Super Mario titles, mostly resembling classic 1 reel slots, then later Mario titles these developed into multi-line versions and countless other styles of slot machine were used as bonus rounds or mini-games. Casinos and slot machines are synonymous with the Mario genre and almost part of the fabric of the imagined worlds of the games creators. The random chance factor of a slot game works extremely well as a bonus game and Nintendo capture the quirky randomness of slot games and work them into the Mario genre effortlessly.

There’s absolutely loads more casino games and games of chance dotted throughout the Mario series, plus even more extending out into other Nintendo games.
